Charis Christodoulou graduated from Anatolia College in Thessaloniki (1989). She studied architecture at the AUTh School of Architecture (Diploma 1995). She completed postgraduate studies in urban design at the Joint Centre for Urban Design, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford (M.A. 1996), with the dissertation “Urban Regeneration and Cultural Interventions in European Cities at the Turn of the Century”. She received her PhD from the AUTh School of Architecture (2008) after defending her doctoral thesis “Urbanisation and Spaces of Social Exclusion: Settlements on the Periphery of Thessaloniki, 1980-2000”.
Her specialisation in urban planning and urban design develops through her research and teaching on their contemporary theories and practices, as well as on the necessary elements of urban geography (urbanisation, tourism, gender approaches, landscape, etc.). It also covers their design and applied dimension, through her professional experience in planning and architectural projects and their realisation, while working for private and public sector bodies. Her built architectural work has received distinctions and has been included in exhibitions of architectural work. She has also taken part in, and received distinctions in, architectural and urban design competitions with various teams.
Her research focuses on urban regeneration, housing development, urban transformations and the socio-spatial formation of the contemporary Greek city. She has published papers and given presentations on these topics at Greek and international meetings, and has taken part in interdisciplinary research teams. She is particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches to updating and enriching the tools and methods of urban design and planning: on the one hand, highlighting and integrating issues of social justice, gender approaches and otherness in design processes, based on contemporary understandings of urban space in urban geography; and on the other, critically reviewing and enriching design across interrelated scales (architecture of the city – urban design – urban planning – spatial planning). She is a founding member and coordinator of activities of the Research Unit on the Cities of the European South in the Department of Urban Planning, Spatial Planning & Regional Development, AUTh School of Architecture (http://southeuropean-cities.arch.auth.gr/).
In teaching, she taught urban planning and urban design (theory and urban composition at architectural and urban scale) and theory of space and gender at the School of Architecture of the University of Thessaly (teaching at lecturer level under Presidential Decree 407/80, 2001 – 2005). Since 2009 she has taught urban composition at architectural and urban scale, as well as theory of urban design, planning, spatial planning and urban geography, at undergraduate and postgraduate level at the AUTh School of Architecture. She has been invited to lecture at universities in Greece and abroad.
